The Dream Circle by Máire Malone

A beautiful story about trauma, grief, hope, and how the power of love can heal…

Malone’s poignant debut immerses readers into a world of dreams, interpretation, and human drama. Pearl Conors has always found herself to be fascinated by dreams. Raised in a dysfunctional family, she has dealt with drugs and addiction. But now at 35, she is holding a respectful job, the traumas of her troubled past far behind. When she hears about Ireland’s first Dream Circle, a course in which students are taught to find meaning in their unconscious visions, she immediately enrolls herself in. But her attraction toward Fergus Doherty, the course’s founder, puts the Dream Circle’s future at risk. Fergus’s complicated relationship with Pearl as he struggles with Sandra’s loss adds to the intrigue while the lyrical, affecting prose fuels the tale’s compulsive readability. Malone is at her best when writing about her characters’ immensely agonizing experience of coming to terms with their past trauma. Her exploration of love, human connection, race and class discrimination, individual angst, self-discovery, and identity is equally compelling. Both the whimsey element of the story and the angsty human drama work beautifully. Readers will be wowed.
