A misfit group of strangers set out on a mission to stop the dangerous villains in Shokeir’s thrilling debut. When a mysterious superpowered man, Slate, is dug up at a semi-secret military base in the Sahara, Victoria Zaidi, a young heiress, arrives at the base to interrogate him about her father’s death. A group of mercenaries soon follow, slaughtering everyone in their path. The survivors, including Victoria, her bodyguard, a couple of young military cadets, and the eccentric Gen. Eisenhorn must accompany Slate if they want to survive. Shokeir’s prose is crisp, and his dialogue is leavened with humor and zest. The novel is powered by a horde of narrative elements: deeply intriguing and meticulously crafted worldbuilding, an intricate storyline with fascinating action scenes, and multilayered characters. The twists are in plenty, and although there are tons of shifting parts, Shokeir does a wonderful job handling them. An exciting SF novel that doubles as a steampunk thriller.
