Thrilling and chilling…
In this intriguing supernatural thriller set in 1970s’ Maine from Pack, a navy veteran on a personal mission becomes entangled in a serial murder investigation. After leaving the US Navy, Earnest Kemp begins to look for his wife and baby daughter who have gone missing. His search takes him to the small town of Hallowell in Maine. But someone is killing people, leaving behind mutilated bodies. As an outsider, Earnest soon becomes a target of townsfolk’s suspicion. The stakes rise when one of Earnest’s own disappears. Pack is deft when it comes to balancing the plot and the characters, and the dynamic between his intriguing flawed characters, particularly Earnest and Linda (who’s mostly present through Earnest’s journal entries), is authentic. He makes a quaint town plagued by fear and unrest feel palpable. Bella’s, Carla’s, and Malla’s intriguing backstories combined with swift pacing keep the pages flying. Fans of gripping supernatural thrillers will be glad to sink their teeth in this one.
