The Conjurer’s Curse by Stephanie Cotta

Incredibly immersive and tightly plotted… A page-turner.

Cotta’s fantastical tale is steeped in secrets, betrayals, magic, and mayhem. Rowan has always known he is an outsider in Karahvel: he is supposedly cursed, bringing death to those around him. When his fourth Guardian-Mother dies, Rowen finds himself banished from the village, leaving him no choice but to look for his own homeland and find the Conjurer behind his curse. But the kingdom of Shandria is a dangerous place, and Rowen has no idea whom to trust. Populated by cunning, conjurers, and monsters, Cotta’s fantasy world is vividly drawn. The zipping plot is punctuated with quiet introspective moments and brilliantly crafted action scenes. The richly detailed characters are given depth and nuance, especially when they struggle with their individual turmoil. Equally intriguing is Cotta’s deft examination of how trauma and grief change people and how one’s choices shape one’s destiny. A brilliant YA fantasy that’s as entertaining as it is thoughtful.
