A Portion of Malice (Ages of Malice, #1) by Lloyd Jeffries

A gripping and intricately plotted supernatural tale primed for a sequel…

Jeffries kick starts his Ages of Malice series with this intriguingly dark supernatural tale of ancient prophecies and darkness. Struggling after a personal tragedy, the renowned journalist Emery Merrick is planning to end his life. When the immortal Roman Longinus approaches him to write the billionaire Thaddeus Drake’s biography, Emery becomes curious. Soon, Drake reveals himself to be the biblical Cain, offering Emery wealth and riches in exchange for writing Cain’s story. Emery agrees, unaware of Drake’s sinister goal. Jeffries’ crisp prose deftly introduces the main protagonists but keeps many of the secondary characters in shadows (particularly, the immortals which he takes from the Bible and history). Cain’s story moves at an impressive pace. Standouts among the cast include tormented and struggling Emery, and Thaddeus, whose haunting backstory brings out his dark persona. The story boasts tight action scenes. Relentless twists and deadly betrayals are in abundance. Epic in scope and size, the novel makes for a stunner.
