Requiem for Miriam by Len Handeland

An engrossing, dark read…

On the surface, life seems perfect for Miriam: she has a fulfilling job in a museum, and her husband Sidney is a highly successful doctor in New York. But things are not as they seem on the surface. Sidney is seeing a glamorous model and is looking to end his marriage. When an unexpected incident leads to Miriam’s death at Sideny’s hands, all hell breaks loose. Even in after life, Miriam is determined to avenge her death. What appears to be a straightforward murder mystery, immediately veers into paranormal/horror territory with an interesting take on themes of afterlife and revenge. The prose is straightforward and the characters authentic. While the relentless twists and a satisfying ending make this a page-turning read, the story moves very quickly, leaving little room for conflicts to develop believably. However, the third-person omniscient narrative voice puts the reader directly into the characters’ minds, revealing their inner turmoil. Readers looking for a quick paranormal thriller will want to take a look.
