A searing and sensitive portrait of romantic love…
This beautiful and poignant book from debut author Simon beautifully encompass her intimate thoughts, exploring the intricacies of romantic love. A poignant mix of snippets of conversation and wisps of observations and inner musings, “a year ago// a year later,” delves into the inherent pull of love and attraction. “mindplays” is all about pious, soulful love whereas “you’re not mine” explores unrequited love. In “more than meet the eyes,” the protagonist documents the tiny, unexpected things that made her fall in love with her soulmate. Simon’s observations are keen, interweaving vivid details with rich imagery, as in “what meets the eyes” : “You – every feature that you have makes up the beauty that you are./ Even if art is for display, art is supposed to make you feel something,/ and from my eyes, you’re a masterpiece.” Simon has a gift for rhythmic imagery; in “Dialogue,” she writes: ““What’s the most dangerous thing you’ve ever done?” Asked Curiousty./ Fall in love, I said, I had to learn how to trust and be open, leaving me vulnerable, and I wasn’t ready/ to feel or for the feelings.” Her best lyrics are intense, philosophical, and deeply personal: ”I don’t want the typical vigorous movement of our bodies/ but the synchronizing movement of our minds./ Taking the time of getting our minds engaged/ while building an array of intimacy as we become intimately closer.” Simon’s flair for craft combined with her unique way of seeing and experiencing things make this collection a thoroughly engaging, stirring read. Simon is a poet to watch.
