Medieval Mashup (Leigh’s Wheelie Adventures) by Charlene McIver

Full of heart, full of fun…

Based on the true story of Leigh who was born with a severe physical disability, McIver’s heartwarming second installment in Leigh’s Wheelie Adventures follows Leigh and his friends as they prepare for their school’s Medieval Fair. The Medieval Fair in the school is just around the corner, and Leigh is super excited. But Tara and Cosmo’s costume suggestions are making Leigh irritated. As the mother of a child who was born with a severe physical disability, McIver understands Leigh’s inner turmoil (she’s especially good at portraying the challenges Leigh has to face on a daily basis because of his disability) and wisely refrain from preaching readers. Instead, she portrays Leigh’s dilemma of picking up a medieval costume as a minor yet significant matter that can be solved through open-mindedness. Leigh, Tara, and Cosmo’s bond is heartwarming, and the measured, understated narration keeps the reader invested. Caroline Keys’s muted colored illustrations are both cheery and hopeful. Excellent book to start discussion about disability, inclusion, understanding, and acceptance.
