A fun page-turner…
Heaps of mystery, laugh-out-loud humor, and space intrigue abound in this fun space opera by Clarke. Lem and her faithful German Shepherd, Spock, arrive in Algonquin Park for hiking and find themselves kidnapped by a bunch of strange, out-of-their-depth intergalactic bounty hunters aboard a ship called the Teapot. But they aren’t the only prisoners there: there are also other alien species. The gang must devise a plan to escape their captors and make it back home safely. There are preposterous scenarios, action-filled brushes with danger, and never-ending supply of culture references. Heroes, villains, and settings are all fully realized, and alien technology gives way to sheer delight. There is a vast cast of quirky characters, but it’s Lem and Spock who really keep the pages turning. Though it’s a mission to escape the intergalactic bounty hunters and get back to Earth, the crux of Lem’s purpose is to find her own place in the world. A totally satisfying debut in a promising series.
