Simply un-put-downable…
Set in 2080, Johnston’s latest installment in A Peter Straw, Third Eye Mystery series sees the detective pair on the track of an elusive inhuman criminal. The blind detective Peter Straw and his intellectually-augmented seeing eye dog Watson are called on the Arctic coast of Northern Canada to solve a series of attacks against local Inuit villages and a possible autonomous A.I. gone rogue. As they begin to investigate, they uncover a shocking conspiracy of international consequences. Johnston builds a richly textured world and creates authentic characters. The suspense of the plot, driven by the fear and anger of an unlikely pair of a human and an AI, never dwindles. The story of how Playboy plans and carries out the extraordinary attack is vividly rendered and wholly plausible. But it’s what happens when Playboy takes control of his own actions while experiencing the human emotion of ego, pride, and rage, that makes this story so compelling and readable. Additionally, the subtle use of spirituality and the Indian folklore and mythology adds a mystic undertone to the story. A solid hit.
