The After House (A Haunting on Long Island Series Book 3) by Michael Phillip Cash

Poignant, witty, and propulsive… A standout gothic tale.

Cash returns with this fine blend of gothic romance and humor in his latest novel. A year after getting divorce, the lovely Remy Galway buys a 300-year-old cottage in historic Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, hoping to begin afresh with her daughter Olivia. But there is someone lurking in the heaven of their new home who has no intention to let the duo settle in nicely. Cash is an expert at setting a supernatural mood perfect for gentle frights, and his assured narrative places readers right in the middle of the quaint town of Cold Spring Harbor. Remy and Hugh’s romance structures the book, but its core is Captain Eli, a rage-filled ghost, the cottage’s invisible occupant, who, despite his awfully short temper, is endearingly cute. Eli’s past is soaked with tortuous memories, old regrets, and his present, with his inability to move forward, is nightmarish at best. However, Remy’s struggle as she tries to come to terms with the trauma of Scott’s deception is as compelling a storyline as Eli’s descent into unprecedented rage and the tortured memories of his ghostly life are a truly poignant story. There’s a lot going on in this remarkable novel, with the protagonists dealing with excruciating pain, deep grief, old regrets, and constant trauma. But there is also love, poignant emotion, humor, and lightheartedness. Told in a unique voice with multifaceted characters, the cozy gothic will keep readers glued to the pages until the very end—all while falling in love with the quirky cast. A stunner.
