A thoroughly imagined supernatural tale with taut pacing and compelling characters…
Lunden’s exceptional ninth installment in her A Bulwark Anthology is hefty on both chills and thrills. For as long as Dana can remember, she has always loved Sheriff Clay Finnes. But Clay is happily married and unavailable. When a mysterious stranger comes into Dana’s life, she immediately feels a strange pull. Dana must face her own fears if she wants to find her happily-ever-after. Lunden’s prose is crisp and characterization thorough. Dana, who remains mostly an unlikable character throughout the earlier installments of the series comes out as a painfully flawed and deeply human character, and readers will find it impossible not to root for her. As the story progresses forward, Lunden pushes readers deeper into Bulwarks’ small-town intrigues and ratchets up the tension, both otherworldly and human. The resolution is both highly unexpected and profoundly satisfying. This lean, dark volume will no doubt entice readers to reach for the other books in the anthology. A stunner.
