Babies on Board Part 1 by Susan Marie Chapman (Author), Natalia Loseva (Illustrator)

A cozy, feel-good, and fun offering.

A beach-day wish becomes a quiet lesson in kindness, family, and responsibility in Chapman’s thought-provoking picture book. Little Mouse, the newest member of Grumpy the Iguana and Green Parrot’s circle, pulls a wish that reads, “Beach day with your family.” While he’s eager, Mr. Squirrel protests, “Do I have to go? I’m not really a beach squirrel.” Still, Little Mouse gently reframes things: “You are a part of my family, aren’t you?” That idea (family as something chosen) anchors the story.

The plot itself is simple: a trip to the beach, a fall from a paddleboard, and a rescue by a giant sea turtle who says, “I have never forgotten your kindness.” But beneath that simplicity, the story explores themes of reciprocity and care, especially as the turtle waits for his babies to hatch. The message about protecting nature emerges naturally, never feeling forced. Chapman’s characters are clearly drawn; Little Mouse curious, Grumpy steady, Mr. Squirrel humorously reluctant (“This dreadful sand is everywhere!”). Natalia Loseva’s illustrations are bright and expressive, reinforcing emotion and movement without overwhelming the text.

Perfect for young readers ages 4–8, especially those who enjoy gentle adventure stories with meaningful lessons about friendship, family, and caring for the natural world.
