The Navajo Event by Rick Fishman

A page-turning story steeped in mysticism and intrigue…

When a Navajo healing ceremony miraculously cures a burn victim, her family finds themselves entangled in a high-stake criminal investigation in Fishman’s thrilling debut. After an unfortunate event triggers a fire in a young married couple Carli and Marty’s apartment, Carli is the only one who manages to survive. But with 30% severe burns to her body and a broken spine, she has a long road to recovery ahead. When Carli’s uncle arrives with a group of the Navajo Nation healers to perform a healing ceremony, Carli’s dad immediately gives his permission. Within hours, Carli is fully cured: her burn marks are gone and spinal hardware vanishes. Is it a miracle? Or a hoax to get rich and cover up the murder of her husband? Fishman’s characters are skillfully rendered, his prose is crisp, and the hospital’s investigation into Carli’s astounding recovery unspools steadily and grippingly. Also, knowing the outcome of this miraculous event makes watching it unfold exciting. The narrative is full of fast-paced, non-stop twists and turns (which invites close reading on readers’ part), and the plot is expertly structured to maximize tension and suspense. The mystic background surrounding the Navajo ceremony, the whirlwind of unforeseen turns of events in the hospital, Carli’s life taking a new turn in the aftermath of her recovery, all of it feels authentic. If the story goes on a touch too unusually strange and has perhaps one too many improbable revelations over the course of the narrative, it makes for an exciting, fun thriller. At once funny and exhilarating and steeped in spirituality, the book will appeal to lovers of fast-paced thrillers.
