Remarkable, thought-provoking, and not to be missed…
Humane and superbly well-written, Kirchner’s debut takes readers on an exhilarating ride into a futuristic world lead by outlandish technology. TOMMY PIERRE ANTIKAGAMAC, a star quarterback, is content being the most followed player in the world’s most popular sport: American football. But when an unexplained incident leaves Tommy detached from the Hive and stranded in a desolate land, inhabited by the Freeman, a fringe group of anti-Hive saboteurs, he knows he is in great trouble. And though, returning to the Hive is definitely an option but things are not as they seem on the surface. Kirchner’s characters are solidly crafted and easily likable and the worldbuilding expensive: the Hive in which a person’s thoughts are constantly monitored and crude meanings of population control are incorporated by the authorities, with death and birth ratio remaining constant, is wholly plausible. With skill and subtlety, Kirchner introduces relentless twists and shocking revelations, keeping the reader invested. This slender tale examines the way even small human connections have the ability to disrupt the ruthless powers of authority. This is a highly impressive must-read.
