City Kitties by Rizwan Asad (Author), Andy Catling (Illustrator)

A fun, fresh look at the value of experience…

Asad’s latest children’s picture book is an enjoyable tale of the marvels of adventuring and the significance of valuable experience. Little Mitten is too mischievous to be tired of his own tricks, but the feisty Nessie is too smart to fall for his tricks. Curious, Mitten asks Nessie why she never falls for his ruses. Her answer will leave the young kitten dreaming. The rhyming verse is lively, and with few lines, Asad makes Nessie and Mitten effectively emote while capturing the former’s cheekiness and the latter’s wild personality. Andy Catling delivers energetic and playful illustrations, done in vivid, bright colors that add the feeling of whimsy to the story while catching the protagonists’ vivid personalities. This gentle exploration of experience is thoroughly fun and sure to be appreciated by toddlers. Asad knows how to please youngsters while also entertaining the adults who will certainly be asked to reread the book. A triumph.
