Man from Ireland by Michele G. Charrier

Exquisitely paced and skillfully crafted… A thorough entertainment.

An intricately constructed plot and high action lift Charrier’s debut installment in his gripping action thriller series, featuring the endearing pair of Maddie St. Laurent and Aidan O’Callaghan, two strangers who unexpectedly fall in love. The celebration for her 50th birthday is over, but life has come to a standstill for Maddie. With her boys all grownup and husband too aloof to give her any attention, Maddie is struggling with the aftermath of menopause. But when Aidan comes into Maddie’s life, the spark flies immediately for the couple. Determined to start afresh, the pair decides to move ahead in life. But Maddie is left heartbroken when Aidan disappears suddenly. With the Irish mafia involved, Maddie must tread carefully or risk losing her newfound love. Aidan’s resilience and steadfastness make him an endearing protagonist, and readers will find it easy to root for him. Maddie’s coming-of-age journey from a depressed, broken wife to a resilient woman capable of making hard decisions is sketched with skill and expertise. Charrier makes good use of usual action thriller elements of mob war, murder, kidnapping, conspiracies, political intrigue, romance, and action, delivering plenty of thrilling cat-and-mouse maneuvers and life-or-death situations. And she is effortless when it comes to imbuing the plot with themes of trauma, identity issues, self-discovery, resilience, love, and relationship and marriage intrigue. The narrative remains gripping, prompting quick turns of the page. The shifting relationship between Aidan and Maddie, a fully realized setting, almost nonstop action, and brisk pace enthrall. This is a great start to a promising series.
