An intense YA Dystopian filled with nearly nonstop action and emotional drama…
Daniels kicks off her series starter with a gripping story set in a postapocalyptic world where a teen sibling pair find themselves pitted against the powerful enemies in an unfamiliar world of political corruption and violence. The things begin to look for the twins, Raven and Arrow, after they enter the deeply intriguing world of Polis as Chloe and Hero after being chosen as Silvers. But the Polis is nothing like they imagined it to be. With the ruling class manipulating the whole system for its own gain, the twins must prepare themselves to fight a dangerous battle. Daniels skillfully depicts the action sequences, her plotting is tight, and the conflicting teen emotions are described with precision and skill. The characterization is topnotch: the twins shine all the way through, and it’s their bravery, integrity, and wry cynicism that carry the narrative. Though Daniels does a great job of world-building with the well-constructed postapocalyptic world of Polis, the backstory of how the whole Gold, Silver, Bronze system came into existence isn’t given much emphasis, leaving the reader in dark about the system. Because this is the first book in a series, not everything is resolved, and what is left unanswered makes the reader excited for the next installment: will the Golds put the twins against each other in order to realize their sinister motives? Readers will wait eagerly to learn more. This is an excellently crafted and intelligent novel that succeeds on many levels. Lovers of YA Dystopian will be greatly rewarded.
