JQR by Joey Rodriguez

Original and thoroughly fascinating…
Bizarre and poignant, Rodriguez’s latest tells the story of a boy and his pup who take a horrendous journey to find their human parents after an atomic blast destroys their home. After a nuclear attack leaves landscape shrouded in gray clouds of ash, JoJo, an android, and his loyal dog Pickles journey down the ravaged streets to find their human family and piece together the remnants of a dangerous invasion. Rodriguez’s ruminations on humanity and family ties combined with well-sketched apocalyptic landscape make for a deeply emotional read, and his portrayal of the bond between a human and his pet is well rendered. Despite the story’s impressive emotional quotient, it remains an action-packed, high stake adventure, and readers will have hard time putting it away. Gritty and moving, the book explores the question of what it means to be human. This enthralling apocalyptic fiction should earn Rodriguez a wide audience.
