A slow-burning, engrossing thriller…
At surface, Ellie Power seems to have a normal life; she has a stable home, a loving mother, a nice boyfriend. But she suffers from dissociative identity disorder; her alter ego takes over occasionally and brings destruction for Ellie and those around her. Things take a sinister turn when Ellie wakes up covered in bruises one morning and learns her boyfriend is nowhere to be found. Simants is good at narrating the jumble of a mother-daughter bond and broken family relationships, delving into her characters’ minds, exploring their motives and desires. The narrative becomes tedious at time, but Simants successfully keeps the suspense high with fast-moving plot twists, gearing the reader for a shocking finale. Simants’s adept handling of complex psychological issues in the novel makes it more literary than your regular suspense thriller. Fans of domestic suspense will be highly rewarded.
