A brilliant mystery…

Former chief superintendent of the Sûreté du Québec Armand Gamache investigates murder of a pregnant woman at Three Pines as he returns to work after a nine-month suspension and demotion in Penny’s latest marvelous mystery. Armand Gamache and Agent Lysette Cloutier are sent to investigate the disappearance of pregnant, twenty-five-year-old Vivienne Godin. After her body is found in a river near Three Pines, her abusive, drunken husband Carl Tracey becomes the obvious suspect. But a shocking twist makes Gamache to look at the Vivienne’s murder in a new light. Penny is simply brilliant when it comes to pen down the depth of her characters’ emotions and creating the atmospheric settings as she brings the village of Three Pines to life. Penny’s assured prose is in full gear and her narrative even-paced. While elements of the plot are slightly stretched, Penny keeps an unrelenting grip on the storyline as she explores her characters’ inner psyche while keeping the major focus on the police investigation. The aficionados of well-crafted mysteries will be delighted.
